We are pleased to announce that the Diocese of Brooklyn has issued the permission for parishes to begin taking Mass intentions for the second half of 2025. Here at Saint Bernadette, we plan to open the book to begin this process in the Rectory Office on Tuesday, February 18th.  However, before coming in, we ask you to note the following for your planning:

1) The new diocesan standard request for a donation for each Mass intention will be $20.

2) As part of our partnership with Saint Frances Cabrini Parish and in response to diocesan requests, the Sunday morning Mass schedule will be different beginning in July. Masses here at Saint Bernadette will be at 8:30a.m. and 11:30a.m. (At Saint Frances Cabrini, Masses are currently planned to be at 9:30a.m. in English and 12:30p.m. in Spanish). The Saturday evening Mass times at both parishes will remain the same (4p.m. Saint Frances Cabrini and 5:30p.m. here at Saint Bernadette). While it is not pleasant to reduce the Mass schedule, we continue to plan ahead for a better sharing of resources and an imminent reduction in clergy availability both in our specific part of Brooklyn and around the Diocese.

3) We will be adding a second Collective Mass, as a way to help parishioners to arrange for Mass intentions more easily. Both our Saturday 5:30p.m. Mass and our Sunday 11:30a.m. Mass will be Collective Masses, at which up to seven intentions may be taken for the same Mass. If you arrange for an intention at a Collective Mass, please note that names/intentions arranged by others may also be mentioned at the same Mass.

To our St. Bernadette Community, if you are not already an active and registered parishioner,

please stop by the rectory office and speak to our Office Manager, Anna, to register.

Please understand, if you are not a registered parishioner,  we can not issue a letter of recommendation, sponsorship certificates, etc.

Thank you!

Starting Thursday, January 2, 2025, our new weekday Mass schedule begins.

From Monday through Saturday, Mass will take place at 8a.m. with Confessions preceding from 7:30a.m. to 7:50a.m.

A reminder that Saint Frances Cabrini, our neighboring parish, usually offers weekday Mass at 9a.m.

We recognize that this change will affect the morning routines of our parishioners and friends, and thank you for your patience as we together navigate ongoing clergy shortages and the diocesan wide reconfiguration that is underway. It is our hope that most of our daily Mass attendees will be able to adjust their schedules by an hour (earlier or later) to attend Mass at this new time.

By reducing our weekday schedule to one regular Mass, we are able to attend more properly to funeral families (we average a funeral every 5 days), our Academy, committees and groups, and other needs within the parish and beyond. Please note that on Holy Days of Obligation, there is an entirely separate schedule of Masses that will be published and announced well ahead of time for each holy day in the bulletin.

What a wonderful way to remember and honor our loved ones, living or deceased, with our weekly Memorial Gifts.

On Sunday October 6 2019, Our Parish was proud to present a newly restored image of Our Lady of Pompeii. HAIL HOLY QUEEN, MOTHER OF MERCY!

A Child’s Greeting

On Good Friday I received something from the young son of an old friend. It was a page from a coloring book showing a priest celebrating Mass with an angel behind. My friend’s kindergarten son had colored the picture for me. Along with the picture was a child’s act of spiritual communion. It has a deeply moving simplicity that should be prayed by every adult. I print it here with thanks to John Paul for his gift of hope in these difficult days.

O Holy Angel, at my side,

Go to the church for me,

Kneel in my place at Holy Mass

Where I desire to be.

At Offertory in my stead,

Take all I am and own,

And place it as a sacrifice

Upon the altar throne.

At holy consecration bell,

Adore with the Seraph’s love,

My Jesus, hidden in the Host,

Come down from heaven above.

And when the priest Communion takes,

Oh, bring my Lord to me,

That his sweet Heart may rest on mine,

And I his temple be.

St. Bernadette can share in the profits. For each car, truck or van, running or not, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul will give back to our church $50/$100 per vehicle. Maybe you don’t have a vehicle, but a family member, friend or neighbor has an old or neglected vehicle in their driveway that they would like to dispose of. Call the Society of St. Vincent de Paul at (718) 491- 2525. Thank You for your participation.
